From a marble quarry in northern Greece to Netflix.

Sacrifice, the new film by Romain Gavras, starring Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek Pinault and John Malkovich, was filmed inside our group’s underground marble quarry at Volakas, near Drama, which is operated by Nordia. In the film, the quarry’s underground chambers become the setting for an extravagant celebrity gala.

Sacrifice arrives on Netflix in the US and France on 16 October.

From working quarry to film set

Volakas is one of Greece’s best-known white marbles, with a bright white ground and soft grey veining. Our quarry at Volakas is worked both in the open and underground, where the extraction has left vast halls of white marble behind. On camera, these spaces need very little set dressing.

We are honoured to have hosted such a world-class cast and crew, and proud to see Greek marble on screens around the world.

Opening quarries to culture

A quarry is a working site, but it is also a landscape and a piece of heritage. We believe quarries should be more open to the public and to cultural projects like this one: safely, responsibly and on clear terms.

Sacrifice joins a growing list of cultural projects across our quarries, from runway shows to exhibitions. You can see more on our Culture page, or learn about the stone itself in our Volakas marble guide.
